Living Through a Renovation - Give Yourself Room to Recharge

Updated October 23, 2026.

A renovation changes more than your home’s appearance. For a while, it can change your routines, your privacy, and how you use everyday spaces.

Even when work is progressing well, noise, dust, temporary arrangements, and frequent decisions can become tiring. At SodaPop Construction, we believe a good renovation experience includes acknowledging that disruption and planning for it together.

Taking a personal break can help make the experience more manageable.

Plan for Everyday Life Before Work Begins

If you intend to remain at home during construction, discuss what that will involve before the project starts.

Which rooms will be accessible? Will you have a working kitchen or bathroom? How will access, work areas, and protection of existing spaces be arranged?

Some stages may require temporary arrangements or time away from the property. Understanding those stages early gives you more opportunity to plan around work, school, children, and pets.

Take a Break Without Losing Touch

A walk, an afternoon out, or a weekend away can provide welcome distance from the activity at home.

If you will be away, let your contractor know how to reach you and confirm any decisions needed before you leave. Review access arrangements and agree on how updates will be shared.

Your personal break does not need to mean a pause in construction. With the necessary information and approvals in place, scheduled work can continue while you take some time for yourself.

Give Decisions the Attention They Need

It can be difficult to compare finishes or consider a proposed change when you are tired or distracted.

Ask for the relevant information in writing, including options, known costs, and when a decision is needed. Where possible, set aside time to review it rather than responding between other commitments.

Making key selections before construction also reduces the number of decisions competing for your attention during the work.

Agree on a Communication Rhythm

You should know who to contact, how progress will be communicated, and how to raise a concern.

Regular updates help you stay informed without feeling that you need to monitor every activity yourself. If something is worrying you, bring it forward so the team can discuss it with you.

At SodaPop, Victoria handles client communication and overall project coordination, working closely with the site project managers who oversee the technical work on site.

Respect the People Doing the Work

Renovation involves demanding work by people with different skills and responsibilities. Clear working hours, coordinated trade visits, and realistic scheduling help establish expectations for everyone.

Discuss work hours and any restrictions early, including arrangements for weekends and holidays. If the schedule needs to change, the effect on upcoming work should be communicated.

Make the Experience Part of the Plan

You do not have to enjoy every stage of a renovation to be excited about the result.

Practical preparation, clear communication, and occasional time away can make the disruption easier to live with. Let your project team know about concerns or household needs early, so they can be considered in planning.
